Our Story
Rooted in the Cedar Valley Since 1991
Matthias Landscaping Co. was founded in 1991 by Doug Matthias with a simple idea: deliver the kind of outdoor work he would want done on his own property. What started as a small landscaping operation in Waterloo grew steadily over the decades through word-of-mouth referrals and a reputation for quality craftsmanship.
Doug has since retired, but the values he built the company on remain unchanged. Matthias Landscaping continues as a family-owned business dedicated to treating every property — and every homeowner — with the same care and attention that earned 35 years of trust across Black Hawk County and beyond.
Today, the company serves residential and commercial clients throughout Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Waverly, Independence, Hudson, and more than 15 additional communities in northeast Iowa. We have grown from basic lawn care into a full-service landscaping and hardscaping company, but the core philosophy hasn't changed: measure twice, build right, and stand behind the work.

Every project we take on is backed by comprehensive liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. We are fully licensed to perform landscaping, hardscaping, and construction work throughout northeast Iowa.
Our design process begins with an on-site visit where we assess your property, discuss your goals, and take detailed measurements. We then create a custom 2D design plan that lets you see the project before we break ground. This step eliminates guesswork and ensures the finished product matches your expectations.
Material selection matters in USDA Hardiness Zone 5a, where winter temperatures regularly drop below zero. We choose pavers, stone, plants, and lighting systems that are rated for Iowa freeze-thaw cycles. Proper base preparation, including excavation depth, compaction, and drainage, is the foundation of every installation we build.
