Paver Patio Design & Installation for the Cedar Valley

A well-built patio is the most used feature of any outdoor space. It is where you grill, gather with family, host neighbors, and relax on summer evenings. In Waterloo and Cedar Falls, your patio also needs to handle Iowa's reality — heavy spring rains, summer heat, and the repeated freeze-thaw cycles that crack and shift poorly installed surfaces.

At Matthias Landscaping Co., we have been designing and installing paver patios across the Cedar Valley for over 35 years. Our installations start with excavation to the proper depth, followed by a compacted granular base that provides the structural foundation your patio needs to stay level and stable for decades. We finish with polymeric sand joints that lock pavers in place and prevent weed growth between the stones.

Every patio project begins with a custom 2D design plan. We work with you to choose the right size, shape, material, and layout for your property — whether that is a simple rectangular dining patio off the back door or a multi-level entertainment area with built-in seating walls and a fire pit. Our Preferred Patio Material

Interlocking concrete pavers are the gold standard for Cedar Valley patios — durable, versatile, and built to handle Iowa's freeze-thaw cycles.

Concrete Pavers

The most popular choice for Cedar Valley patios. Interlocking concrete pavers come in dozens of colors, shapes, and textures — from smooth contemporary finishes to tumbled old-world looks. They are extremely durable, resist cracking, and are easy to repair if a single unit is ever damaged. Available in standard, permeable, and large-format styles.

Why Base Preparation Matters in Iowa

Iowa's climate is hard on outdoor surfaces. Winter temperatures regularly drop below zero, and the ground can freeze to a depth of 36 inches or more. When that frozen moisture thaws in spring, it expands and shifts the soil — and anything sitting on top of it.

That is why base preparation is the most critical step in any patio installation. We excavate well below the surface, install a carefully graded layer of compacted granular aggregate, and add a leveling course of bedding sand before placing any pavers. This base system distributes loads evenly, drains water away from the surface, and allows the patio to flex slightly during freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or heaving.

It is also why we always slope patios at a minimum grade of 1/4 inch per foot — directing water away from your home's foundation. In areas with heavy runoff, we integrate drainage solutions like channel drains or permeable paver sections to manage water effectively.

How We Build Your Patio

Site Evaluation

We assess your property's layout, drainage patterns, soil conditions, and access points. We discuss how you plan to use the space and take precise measurements for the design.

Design & Material Selection

We produce a custom 2D design plan showing your patio's shape, dimensions, and material layout. You pick from our material samples and approve the design before work begins.

Professional Installation

Our crew excavates, compacts the base in layers, installs edge restraints, places pavers in the approved pattern, and fills joints with polymeric sand for a locked, weed-resistant surface.

Enjoy Your Patio

We clean all debris, compact the finished surface, and walk you through the completed project. Your new patio is ready for furniture, grilling, and all the outdoor time Iowa's summers deserve.

Patio Installation FAQ

A properly installed paver patio will last 25 to 50 years or longer. The pavers themselves are rated for far more than that — it is the base preparation and drainage that determine the long-term performance. With a correctly compacted aggregate base and proper polymeric sand maintenance, your patio should remain level and stable through decades of Iowa weather.

In some cases, yes — pavers can be overlaid onto an existing concrete slab if the concrete is structurally sound, level, and has proper drainage. However, if the existing concrete is cracked, heaving, or settling, it is better to remove it and start with a proper aggregate base. We evaluate your existing surface during the consultation and recommend the best approach for long-term performance.

The ideal installation window in the Cedar Valley runs from late April through October, once the ground has thawed and before sustained freezing temperatures return. Spring and early summer are the most popular times for patio projects because you get to enjoy the new space throughout the season. We recommend scheduling your consultation early in the year to secure a spot in our build calendar.

Paver patios are low-maintenance but not zero-maintenance. We recommend sweeping debris regularly, rinsing the surface a few times per season, and reapplying polymeric sand every three to five years as needed. Sealing pavers is optional but can enhance color and provide extra stain resistance. If a paver is ever damaged, it can be individually replaced without disturbing the surrounding surface — a major advantage over poured concrete.
